Program
OUT OF SITE
The assignment was to work with Pepper island as a model condition to introduce investigations into cross border phenomena and artificial ground. Pepper Island is the artificial island that transmits the Öresund Bridge to the tunnel, ending up in Copenhagen. The category names we use in the following work derives from previous research performed by the project group (see homepage) The project was a part of the optional studio "Emerging Urbanities" (department of architecture, KTH-A ).
Unusual Characteristics
THE MEGA AIM
The SQUID (Seafloor Quality Underwater Intervention Device) squad project deals with the symbiosis between the natural and the artificial. The mega aim has been to use the manmade and artificial in a large scale land art installation to re-establish the ecological balance in the Sound that has been neglected when building the Fixed Link. We propose the deployment of UAVs (Underwater Autonomous Vehicles) that carry out environmental work.
Special Challenges
STATEMENT
We know that nature is vulnerable. Therefore we are not interested in conquering and occupying land. We are not interested in bringing people to the sensitive environmental nave that is Pepper Island. We are interested in using this artificial creature in an artificial way to make an ecological difference. We do not only create a bold large scale land art installation, we actually improve the marine environment. This will give the Fixed Link a positive status, ecologically and otherwise.
Solution
The SQUID
The sound region has proclaimed a vision of becoming the most ecologically viable large urban region in the world. So far the Fixed Link has been a symbol of a political experiment with little or no ground in ecological and environmental considerations. This means that a fundamental part of sustaining the healthy sound region mission is projecting a positive image of environmental awareness. The SQUID Squad Project makes a statement about the future for Pepper Island, the Sound Region and beyond.

IMAGE - Pepper Island has a strategic position in the developing Sound region, and could be utilized for somehow symbolically tying the region together. THE SQUID AS A SYMBOL OF THE REGION.
FLOW - The artificial island could rightfully be considered as merely a part of the Fixed Link infrastructure and be treated as a piece of land art, illustrating and visualizing the movements through the system. THE SQUID VISUALIZE THE FLOW.
PERMANENCE - The Sound is of vital ecological importance to the whole of Scandinavia. And the Fixed Link Project, coupled with decades of pollution, has had profound effects on the equilibrium of the Baltic Sea. Pepper Island is situated "right in the heat of battle" and should play a part in reversing the ongoing destructive processes.
THE SQUID MAKE POSITIVE, SUSTAINABLE DIFFERENCE.
